The neighborhood

Columbia City is a neighborhood in the Rainier Valley area of southeast Seattle, Washington, known for being one of the "hottest" neighborhoods

in Seattle and for its diverse population. 98118, the zip code of Columbia City, was listed as the most ethnically diverse zip code in America, and the community reflects that.  The neighborhood is extremely walkable (having a 92% "WalkScore") and has many transit options.

Its main thoroughfares are Rainier Avenue S. and Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. (north- and southbound) and S. Alaska Street (east- and westbound). Efforts are underway to extend bike lanes into the neighborhood and slow traffic to safer speeds on Rainier Avenue. Work has already begun on a series of sidewalk improvements.  The community is served by the Columbia City Link Light Rail station (approximately 18 minutes from downtown Seattle), and several Metro bus lines, including the 7,8,9, 39, and 42.

Genesee is the neighborhood surrounding Genesee Park and southward towards the eastern hill of Columbia City.  The soft rolling hills of this area provide for lots of sun exposure, creating amazing urban farms and beautiful gardens.  Strolling through the streets you'll find homes with goats and chickens, as well as well structured traditional garden spaces.  North of Genesee St is the preserve portion of the park.  Those surrounding the park have access to not only their own gardens, but indigenous horticultural beds managed by the City of Seattle.

Close by is the shore of Lake Washington.  Leading to the lake is a very special restoration and preservation area of marsh and meadow.  This community and city effort to preserve Seattle's natural gardens is a great example of responsibility at work in the Rainier Valley.  There is more to the Genesee area than mentioned here.  Take some time after the tour to familiarize yourself and see what is happening in this exciting community.

The Othello neighborhood lies to the South of Columbia City.  Formerly known as Dunlop-Brighton, this area is home to some of the more wild and prolific gardens.  Many of the residents are bee keepers, leading the way for others who are interested in producing their own honey and agricultural products.  Amazing vegetable gardens abound and thrive as examples of sustainability in Seattle.  There is also a wonderful community park which hosts local events.  Some have even seen goats on the park's hillsides helping with landscaping in a truly green fashion, munching away at the blackberries and other rogues that tend to make their home here.

Close to the Othello neighborhood is also the site of the future Pritchard Beach Urban Farm.  This is an ongoing project, so there will be more to come in the future.
